The Cursillo Weekend
A Cursillo Weekend begins at about tea-time on a Thursday and ends with a closing Eucharist the following Sunday afternoon. It is not possible to come for a shorter period.
Our weekends are held at either Minsteracres Retreat Centre, near Consett in County Durham; OR at Shepherds Dene Retreat House, near Riding Mill in Northumberland.
During the three days, those attending and the team organising the Weekend live, work and worship together. There are usually round about twelve new participants (sometimes fewer) and a slightly larger number of team members (all previous participants), including two priests.
There will be services (including a Eucharist) each day and guided meditations in chapel.
You will hear short talks on the Christian life, each given by one of the team, touching on topics such as Ideal, Grace, Obstacles to Grace, the Life of Prayer, Study, Action, Lay People in the Church, and the Sacraments.
These talks lead to lively follow-up discussions in small groups, and there is the opportunity to try your hand at artwork and drama (though the last two are optional!).
During the Weekend you will be working in small table groups for discussion, with, probably, two team members assigned to each table.
A Cursillo Weekend is not a quiet retreat, though there will be some space for reflection. But be prepared to be fairly busy!
We cannot promise that every single aspect of the very varied Weekend will be just right for you, but many people have found it a significant moment in their journey of faith, for some a time of healing, for others a crucial turning point.
We can promise that there will be fun, surprises, and much laughter. There will also be a lot of support, not only from the priests and the other members of the team, but from prayers that will be offered for you from other members of the Cursillo community, in Durham and beyond.
Cursillo Weekends are a time of learning about prayer. You will also have your mind stretched, your imagination stirred, and your heart moved. As one person has said: ‘I was drenched in love’.
It is the policy of the Cursillo movement that no one be debarred from going on a Weekend because of the cost. In Durham, owing to the generosity of our members, we are able to offer the Weekend free of charge.
Those who would like to give financial support to enable people to come on subsequent Weekends are invited to do so at the close.
Application forms are available from this Website. For more information, ask anyone who has been on a Weekend, or contact any member of the Secretariat, to whom you should also refer if you have questions about sponsorship.
